Originating in China in 3,000 BC, nail color indicated one’s social status, according to a Ming Dynasty manuscript; royal fingernails were painted black and red. Ancient Egyptians have been manicuring all the way back to 2300 BC. A depiction of early manicures and pedicures was on a carving from a pharaoh’s tomb, and the Egyptians paid special attention to their feet and legs. The Egyptians also colored their nails, using red to indicate the highest social class.

Q fever

An infection of Coxiella burnetii, a bacterium that affects both humans and animals, causes Q fever. This organism is uncommon but present in cattle, sheep, goats and other domestic mammals, including cats and dogs. The infection results from inhalation of contaminated particles in the air, and from contact with the vaginal mucus, milk, feces, urine or semen of infected animals. The incubation period is 9-40 days. Q fever is the most infectious disease in the world, because a single bacterium can cause widespread infection.
